At the very northern tip of Maine sits a small wooden fort with a surprisingly big story.
The Fort Kent Blockhouse stands where the Fish River meets the St. John River, marking the only surviving fortification from the unusual and largely peaceful Aroostook War.
Despite the dramatic name, the conflict is often called the “Bloodless War.” Tensions over the Maine–New Brunswick border led both sides to mobilize militias, but diplomacy ultimately prevailed with the Webster–Ashburton Treaty, which settled the boundary dispute.
The two-story blockhouse itself is impressive — built from square-hewn cedar logs, some measuring more than 19 inches wide. Today, it serves as a small museum and is both a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
